Author Notes:

Originally carved in wood, the alphabet finds its roots in the German term "Buchstaben," a fusion of "Buche" (beech) and "Stab" (rod or stick). This etymology harkens back to the ancient Germanic tradition of inscribing runic characters onto beechwood sticks. On the eve of New Year's in 2014, I seized the opportunity to craft these "genuine beech characters" myself. Each letter of this font was meticulously hand-carved in the traditional woodcut fashion, devoid of tracing and presented in its mirror image, etched into smoothly planed beech rods. The digital font displayed here is a product of this negative typeface's transformation onto paper. Initially conceived as an alphabet exclusively comprising capital letters, the project eventually expanded to encompass numerals, punctuation marks, and lowercase letters. The capital letters exude an interplay of bold and delicate strokes, reminiscent of the classical Roman typefaces, granting Bruta Woodcut its distinctive aesthetic appeal. Conversely, the lowercase letters possess a more subdued ductus, resembling a classical sans-serif font. As text size diminishes in Bruta Woodcut, the readability of the lowercase characters is enhanced, reinforcing their legibility. The original imagery was captured in the negative, while the font is based on the positive typeface. Bruta Woodcut boasts an abundance of ligatures and stylistic alternates for certain symbols. Thanks to the capabilities of OpenType and Unicode, Bruta Woodcut offers support for an extensive range of languages, including Western European languages, Central and Eastern European languages, and Turkish.
